CHRIS HILLS, MARK HIBBARD, OUR ATHLETIC TRAINER, OF COURSE, MIKE HANSEN AND THE JACKSONVILLE HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS MEDICINE TEAM. EVERYONE JUST DID A TREMENDOUS JOB. I JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU FOR THAT AND WE'RE REALLY HAPPY TO REPORT THE STUDENT IS RECOVERING WELL AT HOME. THAT'S GOOD NEWS. THE OTHER THING I'D LIKE TO CELEBRATE IS DR. SCOTT CHRIS, IS OUR WYOMING PRINCIPAL OF THE YEAR. THAT WAS ANNOUNCED LAST WEEK. ESTHER WHO ALSO SERVES AS OUR LEAD NURSE FOR OUR K12 HEALTH SERVICES TEAM, THIS WAS A NEW DECISION THIS YEAR. ESTHER, I REMEMBER THAT LAST AUGUST WHEN WE MET TO DISCUSS THIS ROLE. [LAUGHTER] I WAS SO EXCITED ABOUT ALL THE POSSIBLE THINGS THAT WE COULD DO WITH THE HEALTH SERVICES TEAM. WE WERE EXCITED ABOUT BUILDING UP A NURSE MANUAL, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, GROWTH OF THIS TEAM. WE TALKED ABOUT COVID. [LAUGHTER] AT THAT TIME WE HAD NO IDEA WHAT WE WERE ABOUT TO FACE AND HOW ALL ENCOMPASSING THE JOB IS GOING TO BE. AT THE START OF THE SCHOOL YEAR, YOU HIT THE GROUND RUNNING COME OCTOBER THROUGH DECEMBER. YOU WERE EASILY AVERAGING 60 TO 80 HOURS A WEEK. YOU WERE WORKING LATE INTO THE EVENING. YOU WERE GIVING UP EVERY WEEKEND, NEED TO WORK 10 HOURS A DAY AWAY FROM YOUR FAMILY. ALWAYS WITH A CAN-DO, NEVER COMPLAINING, POSITIVE ATTITUDE. DURING THIS TIME, YOU WERE NOT ONLY MANAGING THE DAY-TO-DAY DUTIES OF BEING A SCHOOL NURSE AT FOUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS. YOU WERE DEVELOPING OUR DISTRICT'S COVID POLICIES, PROCEDURES, GUIDING DOCUMENTS, AND COMMUNICATIONS WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY CONTACT TRACING SOLELY FOR THE ENTIRE DISTRICT AND DEVELOPING OUR STAFF AND STUDENTS SURVEILLANCE PROGRAM. [LAUGHTER] YOU MANAGED ALL OF THIS WITH PROFESSIONALISM, GRACE, AND STYLE. WHEN FACED WITH CHALLENGES FROM STUDENTS, STAFF, PARENTS, PRINCIPALS, AND EVEN ME, YOU DID SO WITH KINDNESS AND COMPASSION. IN THE MOST CHALLENGING TIMES YOU WOULD LOOK TO ME, SMILE AND SAY, IT'S OKAY, WE GOT THIS. [00:05:02] [LAUGHTER] I NEVER ONCE DOUBTED YOU. AS A RESULT OF THE LONG DAYS AND WEEKS YOU PUT IN THIS YEAR, YOUR LEADERSHIP, THE HEALTH SERVICES TEAM, REALLY BLEND IN TOGETHER. THIS IS AN AMAZING TEAM. I'M PROUD OF THIS TEAM AND YOU SHOULD BE PROUD OF THIS TEAM. THROUGH EVERYTHING THEY FACED, THE DAY-TO-DAY OPERATIONS IN EACH BUILDING IS RUN SMOOTHLY. WE NOW HAVE AN EFFICIENT AND VERY EFFECTIVE DISTRICT WHITES SYSTEM FOR SURVEILLANCE AND CONTACT TRACING ALL TCS STAFF AND STUDENTS. STILL, YOU CONTINUED TO WORK TIRELESSLY TO IMPROVE UPON IT. SHE'S LOVED BY STUDENTS. SHE'S A HOT CHOCOLATE SEWER WHO IS CREATIVE, DEPENDABLE, AND HARDWORKING. SHE IS QUIETLY BRILLIANT. I HAVE WATCHED HER OVER AND OVER MAKE DECISIONS THAT ARE IN THE BEST INTERESTS OF STUDENTS AND STAFF. SOMETIMES THIS YEAR IT'S BEEN ON WEEKENDS OR EVENINGS LIKE MAYBE IN AN IDLE FALLS TRYING TO GET MY CAR WORK DONE, THEN HAVING TO SPEND HOURS WITH CHARLOTTE AND ESTHER TO TRY AND GO THROUGH CONTACT TRACING, SCHOOL MESSENGER, MAKE THE RIGHT DECISIONS, WHAT'S BEST FOR KIDS ON A SATURDAY NIGHT. THAT WAS ONE MOMENT IN TIME FOR ME OVER THE YEAR. THAT WAS A WEEKEND OF MAYBE A HANDFUL, BUT THAT WAS EVERY WEEKEND FOR ESTHER AND EVENING FOR WHAT SEEMED LIKE AN ETERNITY [LAUGHTER]. THIS YEAR SHE GAVE EVERYTHING TO TCSD WITH A SMILE, A MASK, AND A POSITIVE ATTITUDE, AND I'VE WATCHED HER HAVE DIFFICULT CONVERSATIONS, AND EVERY TIME TAKE THE HIGH ROAD. THERE HAS BEEN TIMES I'VE LEFT WILSON FEELING VERY GUILTY THAT SHE WAS STILL ON THE PHONE WAITING FOR THE COUNTY, THE STATE, SOME SHIPPING FROM AMAZON WITH VOL TESTING. I DON'T KNOW. I WOULD TRY TO CONVINCE HER TO LEAVE, BUT SHE HAD TO WAIT FOR THAT PHONE CALL. SHE'S ASSISTED WITH THINGS LIKE JULIE SAID FROM THAT SCHOOL NURSE STANDPOINT OF THE USUAL TYPICAL PIECE, 504 PLANS, HEALTH CARE PLANS, KINDERGARTEN INFO, NIGHTS, SCRAPES, HEAD BUMPS. I WENT BACK THROUGH OUR EMAILS BECAUSE ESTHER SEES AND RECEIVES A LOT OF THOSE, VERY COMMON THINGS FOR A WHILE, I MEAN NURSE, WE'VE HAD THESE THINGS HAD BUMPED, EATING YELLOW FLOWERS AT RECESS. RESPOND. MORE HEAD BUMPS KICKED BY A MOOSE, ALLERGIES, CPR TRAINING, PUBERTY TALKS, NOSE BUMP, LIP BUMP LIKE IT GOES ON. BUT THIS YEAR WAS LIKE NO OTHER. THAT LEAD NURSE ROLE TURNED HER INTO A COVID NINJA. SHE BECAME INCREDIBLE AT SHIPPING VOLT TESTS AND DOING WITH THE STATE, THE COUNTY, AND PEOPLE. I'VE NO IDEA WHO I WAS ON THE PHONE. SHE WOULD BE DOING BAND-AIDS AND TOSSING OUT ICE PACKS WHILE TALKING TO THE COUNTY OR WHOEVER IT WAS. MOST OF OUR EMAILS AND CONVERSATIONS THAT I LOOKED AT WERE PLEXIGLASS AND HAND SANITIZER, TEST RESULTS, SYMPTOMS, UPDATED GUIDANCE, URGENT MESSAGE. COVID. COVID [LAUGHTER]. THAT WAS THE MAJORITY OF THE EMAILS. WE'VE HAD LAUGHS, WE'VE HAD TEARS, WE'VE SHAKEN OUR HEADS A LOT. YOU CAN SEE THAT INCORPORATED INTO HER INSTRUCTION, WHICH MAKES IT JUST A MORE WELL-ROUNDED CLASS. THEN THE THIRD THING I'D LIKE TO HIGHLIGHT IS AMY'S TEACHER LEADERSHIP. I DIDN'T KNOW AT THE TIME THAT I WOULD FULFILL THIS MANTRA AS A TEACHER, BUT I KNEW THE TRUTH OF THE WORDS LIVE DEEP IN MY HEART. MY ENGLISH TEACHER SURELY DID NOT KNOW THE INNOCENT POSTER KEY HANG ON HIS WALL, WOULD SHAPE MY LIFE. THE STRENGTH OF THE SCHOOLS IS IN ITS TEACHERS. THE SUCCESS OF A CHILD IS THE TEACHER'S CAPACITY TO ENHANCE THEIR OPPORTUNITIES AND SUPPORT THEM THROUGH CHALLENGES. TEACHERS JOIN THIS PROFESSION TO TOUCH THE FUTURE, AND TO EASE ONE LIFE THE ACHING. AS TEACHERS, WE OFTEN DO NOT KNOW HOW WE SHAPE THE LIVES OF OUR STUDENTS OR WHAT SEEDS WE PLANT. THEN AT MIDDLE SCHOOL ON MAY 18TH, REMEMBER THE FIRST VACCINE AND JUNE EIGHT FOR THE SECOND. THE REASON WE'RE HOSTING THESE STUDENT VACCINATION CLINICS AS OF TODAY, 12-YEAR-OLDS AND ABOVE HAVE BEEN APPROVED WITH THE PFIZER VACCINE. PARENTS WILL BE ABLE TO REGISTER THEIR STUDENT USING THE TETON COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT WEBSITE, SIGN A CONSENT FORM, AND THEN WE'LL TELL THE STUDENTS ADD A CLASS. THEY'LL MISS APPROXIMATELY 30 MINUTES OF CLASS. PARENTS CAN COME WITH THEIR CHILD AND THEY WOULD LIKE, PARENTS CAN ALSO RECEIVE THE VACCINE AT SCHOOL, AND OUR INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS WILL ALSO BE INVITED. WE INTENSIFY, WE DIFFERENTIATE, ARE STUDENTS NOW MEETING GRADE LEVEL STANDARDS, EXPECTATIONS? IF NOT, WE'VE GOT TO FURTHER INTENSIFY, FURTHER INDIVIDUALIZE INSTRUCTION. THAT'S THE CONCEPT OF A TIERED SUPPORT OR MULTI-LEVEL, JUST CONTINUOUSLY GETTING MORE INDIVIDUALIZED. MTSS FRAMEWORKS HAVE SCREENING PROCESSES SO MEASURES LIKE WHY TOP, WHICH IS A BENCHMARK ASSESSMENTS, SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT CAN STILL BE USED AS A SCREENER. WE SCREEN IN LITERACY, MATH, SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING BEHAVIOR. THESE ARE JUST BROAD MEASURES THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO CATCH STUDENTS WHO MAY BE STRUGGLING IN DIFFERENT AREAS. WHEN WE SEE STUDENTS WHO ARE STRUGGLING OR NOT MEETING GRADE LEVEL EXPECTATIONS, THEY'LL COME IN TO THE MTSS PROCESS. WHEN STUDENTS ARE GETTING THAT DIFFERENTIATION, THAT INDIVIDUALIZATION, WE MONITOR THEIR PROGRESS. WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY'RE RESPONDING TO WHATEVER INTERVENTIONS ARE ACTUALLY IN PLACE SO TEAMS ARE LOOKING AT THEIR DATA CONSISTENTLY. AS YOU PROBABLY COULD INFER FROM THOSE THREE POINTS, DATA DECISION-MAKING IS AT THE HEART OF ALL OF THIS. THERE'S VERY SPECIFIC CRITERIA ON IF THESE ARE THE SCREENER SCORES, HERE'S THE TYPE OF INTERVENTION THAT A STUDENT MAY GET. VERY SPECIFIC DATA ON WHEN A STUDENT SHOULD EXIT AN INTERVENTION OR WHEN MAYBE WE SHOULD CHANGE THINGS UP. DATA-BASED DECISION-MAKING IS AT THE HEART OF THAT. ALMOST STARTING FROM THE BEGINNING OF A SCHOOL YEAR, SO WE'VE GOT THE SCREENING PROCESS. LET'S SAY WE DO OUR FALL SCREENERS, NUMBER OF DIFFERENT LITERACY, MATH, BEHAVIORAL ASSESSMENTS WE'RE LOOKING AT. THEN AGAIN, THE STUDENTS WHO ESSENTIALLY ARE NOT ON TRACK OR MAY NOT BE MEETING GRADE LEVEL EXPECTATIONS COME INTO THE MTSS PROCESS. THERE'S AN MTSS TEAM, COLLABORATION WITH CLASSROOM TEACHERS, AND THEN STUDENTS ARE ASSIGNED TO WHATEVER THOSE INTERVENTIONS OR SUPPORTS ARE. THEN OUR MTSS TEAMS MEET ON A WEEKLY BASIS AND THOSE TEAMS USUALLY ARE COMPRISED OF PRINCIPALS, SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGISTS, INTERVENTIONISTS, USUALLY SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHERS, EL TEACHERS AS WELL. THOSE TEAMS MEET ON A WEEKLY BASIS AND THEY DO ONE OF TWO THINGS. WEEK ONE IN A CYCLE IS THE REVIEWING STUDENT DATA. IF THOSE STUDENTS ARE IN AN INTERVENTION, THEY'RE LOOKING JOHNNY MAKING PROGRESS? YES. RYAN MAKING PROGRESS? YES. AJ MAKING PROGRESS? NO. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? THEN THAT STUDENT THE FOLLOWING WEEK IS DISCUSSED AT A PROBLEM-SOLVING MEETING. SHOULD WE BE FOCUSING ON DIFFERENT SKILLS, CHANGE THE INTERVENTION, INTENSIFY IT. THAT CYCLE REALLY JUST KEEPS REPEATING ITSELF EVERY TWO WEEKS, PROGRESS MONITORING AND PROBLEM-SOLVING MEETINGS.
