ONE OF THE PRIORITIES THE BOARD HAS SET IS FOR STUDENTS TO BE NOT ONLY GREAT CITIZENS AND GREAT AND ACADEMIA N'S AND SCHOLARS AND ALSO GREAT ATHLETES AND PARTICIPANTS IN OUR ACTIVITIES.

SO YOU CHALLENGED US TO PUT A SPOTLIGHT ON SPORTSMANSHIP.

AND SO WE WANTED TO HONOR SOME STUDENTS.

AND I'VE ASKED MIKE HANSON TO DO THE HONORS.

SO LET'S START WITH THE GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP AWARDS.

CHAPMAN JUST MENTIONED, SPORTSMANSHIP IS ONE OF OUR GOALS THIS YEAR FOR OUR ACTIVITIES DEPARTMENT.

TRYING TO HIGHLIGHT THAT.

I'M TRYING TO STRIVE TO BE THE BEST IN THE STATE IN THAT AREA.

ONE OF THE WAYS THAT WE'RE GOING TO DO THIS IS WE HAVE SOME T SHIRTS FOR GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP.

AWARD WINNERS, TRY TO TAKE SOME PICTURES, BUT THINGS AROUND SCHOOL, POTENTIALLY A BANQUET AT THE END OF THE YEAR TO CELEBRATE ALL THOSE STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES FOR BEING GOOD SPORTS THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR.

TONIGHT, WE HAD THREE WSHA GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP WINNERS AND A NUMBER OF MIDDLE SCHOOLERS, JACKSONVILLE MIDDLE SCHOOL COLTS THAT WERE CELEBRATING AS WELL.

SO FIRST TIME I HAD COACH HELL SHIRT ON UP AND ACKNOWLEDGE HIS MIDDLE SCHOOL COATS.

IT IS FROM OUR VOLLEYBALL TEAM THAT WENT TO RIVERTON, AND I GOT THE KINDEST EMAIL FROM THEIR COACH WHEN I FIRST LOOKED AT IT AND I SAW AN INBOX.

AND I KNEW THERE WERE A WAY AND SHE WANTED TO COMPLIMENT OUR 2 7TH GRADE GIRLS VOLLEYBALL COACHES FOR JUST BEING THE BEST SPORTSMANSHIP MINDED COACHES SHE HAD SEEN IN A LONG, LONG TIME.

AND IT JUST KIND OF MADE MY DAY, MADE OUR WEEK, AND I DEFINITELY FORWARDED THAT AND TALKED TO OUR COACHES THAT MONDAY.

SO IT IS A BIG PUSH FOR US.

JASON HUGGINS, OUR ASSISTANT ATHLETIC DIRECTOR, STARTED A PROGRAM WHERE ONCE A WEEK THE COACHES GET TO NOMINATE MIDDLE SCHOOL ATHLETE FOR SHOWING GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP AND BEING A GOOD TEAMMATE ON THE TEAM.

SO THERE'S A NEW PROGRAM FOR US, BUT IT'S BEEN GREAT SO FAR.

WE HAD OUR FIRST INDIVIDUAL STATE CHAMPION.

WE ALSO HAD OUR FIRST RELAY STATE CHAMPION AS WELL.

SO THE 200 FREE RELAY WE HAD, WE STARTED OFF WITH AMAYA OLIVIERI, THEN WE HAD NOR, IS THAT RIGHT? NORA WILSON, VEGA SANCHEZ AND MAREN TATTERSALL.

IN ORDER. THAT WAS THEIR ORDER FOR THE RELAY.

AND THEN AMAYA OLIVIERA WAS ALSO A STATE CHAMPION INDIVIDUALLY IN 100 BACKSTROKE.

SO THIS IS PRETTY EXCITING.

AND THE BEST NEWS OUT OF ALL OF THIS IS THAT THIS IS THE OLD PERSON IN THE GROUP AND SHE'S A JUNIOR.

SO ALL FOUR OF THEM WILL BE BACK NEXT YEAR, WHICH IS SUPER EXCITING.

SO WE ARE EXCITED FOR THE FUTURE OF THE PROGRAM FOR SURE.

OH, YEAH. IN YOUR REPORT AND FOR THE MULTIFAMILY EMPLOYEE HOUSING, RFP AND THE RANK ACHIEVEMENT RFP, COULD YOU GIVE US THE HISTORY OF THOSE AND HOW THEY WERE DRAFTED AND IF WE VOTED ON THEM OR WHAT? THANK YOU, MR. CHAIR. TRUSTEE MEAD.

YES, WE DID ISSUE TWO RFP.

THE RFP WE USE WAS WE USE THE STATE DOCUMENTS FOR BOTH DOCUMENT AND THE SELECTION PROCESS.

SO THOSE WERE THE DOCUMENTS THAT WE USED WITH THE 24 UNIT EMPLOYEE HOUSING.

PROJECT. WE ALSO PUT TOGETHER A COMMITTEE THAT INCLUDES A BOARD MEMBER.

SO TRUSTEE ZUNG IS ON THAT COMMITTEE AND WE DID A SIMILAR COMMITTEE FOR THE TREATMENT CENTER AND TRUSTEE SCARLETT IS A MEMBER OF THAT COMMITTEE AS WELL AS OTHER STAFF.

SO USE THE STATE DOCUMENTS AND SELECTION PROCESS.

THE 24 UNIT PROJECT, WE DID GET A GOOD RESPONSE AND THE COMMITTEE DOES HAVE A RECOMMENDATION FOR THE BOARD, WHICH WE'RE PLANNING ON BRINGING FORWARD NEXT MONTH WITH THE BRONCO ACHIEVEMENT CENTER.

WE DID NOT GOOD AS GOOD OF A RESPONSE AS WE'D LIKE DUE TO SOME TECHNICALITIES AND SOME HICCUPS THAT OCCURRED WITH THE RESPONDS.

AND SO WE ACTUALLY NOTIFIED ALL PROPOSAL THAT WE WERE GOING TO REJECT ALL OF THOSE AND START OVER.

AND WE HAVE NOT ISSUED A NEW SCHEDULE FOR THAT.

INTERESTING. MEAD WE HAVE NOT VOTED ON ANYTHING YET AND WE MAY BE OUT A LITTLE AHEAD OF OUR SKIS A LITTLE BIT BECAUSE WE DON'T HAVE ANY MONEY TO PAY ANYBODY YET.

WELL, I WONDERED ABOUT THAT.

SO LITTLE DETAILS.

AND FOR THE SAKE OF THE CONVERSATION, I'M GOING TO FOCUS ON STUDENTS AND STAFF.

IF YOU GO TO THE FIRST SLIDE, YOU'LL SEE JUST AS FAR AS AN OUTLINE.

LET'S TALK ABOUT STUDENTS A LITTLE BIT FIRST THAT SUPPORTS AND THEN I KNOW THERE WAS ALSO SOME QUESTION CONVERSATION AROUND OK.

SO YOU'RE DOING A LOT OF THESE THINGS.

HOW DO YOU ACTUALLY EVALUATE THE IMPACT OF THE MENTAL HEALTH EFFORTS OR THE SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING PROGRAM? AND HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT THE NEEDS ACTUALLY ARE ACROSS YOUR SCHOOLS, ACROSS THE DISTRICT? SO WE'LL TALK ABOUT THAT KIND OF DATA EVALUATION PIECE AS WELL TOWARDS THE END FOR THE FIRST.

SO STUDENT SUPPORTS, I MEAN, I DO WANT TO KICK OFF BY SAYING THIS IS SOMETHING THAT'S A BIG PRIORITY FOR US FOR YEARS.

IT'S NOTHING NEW AT THIS POINT.

I THINK WHAT WE'D LIKE TO SPEAK TO YOU OR AT LEAST SHARE WITH YOU ARE SOME OF THE SPECIFIC EFFORTS THAT ARE GOING ON THIS YEAR.

THIS PROBABLY REPRESENTS A FRACTION OF WHAT'S ACTUALLY GOING ON IN OUR INDIVIDUAL BUILDINGS AND ACROSS THE DISTRICT.

SOME OF THE THINGS I WANTED TO HIGHLIGHT, AT LEAST FROM STUDENTS FOR PERSPECTIVE OF THE FIRST ONE, INCREASED ACCESS TO OUTSIDE COUNSELING SERVICES.

SOME OF YOU ARE AWARE WE'VE HAD THE GENE SMITH FUND IN PLACE FOR YEARS NOW, AND THANKS TO FUNDRAISING EFFORTS AND GRANT EFFORTS, WE CONTINUE TO KIND OF FURTHER EXPAND AND SUPPORT THAT.

ESSENTIALLY, THAT FUNDING RESOURCE.

AND WHAT DOES THAT DO THAT PROVIDES STUDENTS WITH ACCESS TO OUTSIDE COUNSELING SERVICES THAT THEY MAY NOT OTHERWISE HAVE ACCESS TO? SO WE'RE CONTINUING TO KIND OF SUPPORT AND EXPAND ACCESS TO THOSE SERVICES.

LARGELY, THAT'S THROUGH A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE COMMUNITY COUNSELING CENTER.

HOW DOES THIS WORK? AND HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE A STUDENT? IF A STUDENT COMES TO A COUNSELOR OR SOMEBODY IN THE SCHOOL SAID, I NEED HELP? LIKE NOW, DO THEY HAVE TO WAIT A WEEK? DO THEY WAIT A MONTH? DO THEY HAVE IMMEDIATE ACCESS TO SERVICES? THERE'S VARIATION DEPENDING ON ARE WE IN CRISIS OR IS IT JUST MAYBE WE'RE NOT IN CRISIS, BUT WE KNOW WE'D REALLY NEED SOME OUTSIDE COUNSELING SERVICES FOR WHATEVER THE MAYBE IT'S GRIEF, MAYBE WHATEVER THE ISSUE ACTUALLY IS.

SO AS FAR AS HOW IT WORKS, AND I'M GOING TO ALLUDE TO PARE TRUDEL HERE BECAUSE SHE PLAYS A BIG ROLE IN NOT JUST THIS PROCESS, BUT ESSENTIALLY EVERYTHING WE HAVE UP HERE.

IF A STUDENT HAS A NEED, WHAT WE DON'T DO IS SAY, HEY, WHO IS THERE? ANYONE WHO WANTS COUNSELING SERVICES COME AND APPLY.

THAT'S NOT HOW WE RUN IT.

INSTEAD, IT'S KIND OF COMES THROUGH SOME OF OUR SYSTEM INSTRUCTORS.

SO AS TEAMS, WHETHER IT'S NPS TEAMS, PLCS ADMINISTRATIVE TEAMS, AS NEEDS ARE BOILING UP FOR INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS, THEN THAT'S WHERE THAT CONVERSATION GOES OF IS OUTSIDE.

DOES IT SOUND LIKE EITHER THIS FAMILY'S INTERESTED IN OR MAYBE WE THINK THEY WOULD BENEFIT FROM OUTSIDE COUNSELING SUPPORTS? IT'S MAYBE MORE INTENSIVE THAN WHAT WE WOULD PROVIDE WITHIN A SCHOOL SETTING.

AND THEN THERE WOULD BE A CONVERSATION WITH THAT STUDENT OR THAT STUDENT'S FAMILY AS FAR AS ACCESSING THOSE SERVICES.

THERE ARE THERE'S A CAP TO WHAT THAT ACTUALLY PROVIDES, BUT I THINK IT SERVES A GOOD FUNCTION OF AT LEAST GETTING THAT INITIAL CONNECTION TO FORMAL OUTSIDE COUNSELING SERVICES. SO LARGELY GETTING THAT ACCESS THROUGH AND JUST STRUCTURES AND REFERRAL SYSTEMS. BUT WHAT ABOUT WE HEARD SOME COMPLAINTS THOSE OF US WENT THROUGH WENT TO, WHAT, 22 OR 21 OR 21 OR 22 FROM STUDENTS ACTUALLY, WHO WERE THERE, WHO HAD NO IDEA THAT THERE WAS ANY ACCESS TO COUNSELING SERVICES.

SO IN OCTOBER WE LAUNCHED WELLNESS 22 WITH ON SITE FLU SHOT PROGRAMING.

WE DID THIS IN COLLABORATION WITH PUBLIC HEALTH AND WITH THE HELP OF THEIR MOBILE VACCINE BUS, WE WERE ABLE TO VACCINATE 194 STAFF AT THE TOWN SCHOOLS.

TO FOLLOW UP, WE HELD STAY HEALTHY 22 ONSITE EDUCATIONAL WELLNESS EVENTS REGARDING COLD AND FLU PROGRAMING.

REGARDING COLD AND FLU PREVENTION.

THE EVENTS TOOK PLACE AT 14 BUILDINGS AND WE HAD 263 EMPLOYEES ATTEND.

EACH ATTENDEE RECEIVED AN IMMUNE BOOSTING JUICE SAMPLE, A SHOWER STEAMER AND HEALTHY RECIPES.

WE ALSO HAD TWO NURSES ON SITE TO ANSWER ANY COLD AND FLU RELATED QUESTIONS.

SO HERE AT UCSD, NOVEMBER IS GRATITUDE MONTH.

WE'RE ABOUT HALFWAY THROUGH OUR MONTH LONG GRATITUDE CHALLENGE.

IT'S A VIRTUAL CHALLENGE, AND WE HAVE ABOUT 144 PARTICIPANTS.

SHOWING GRATITUDE HAS BEEN CONNECTED TO IMPROVING HAPPINESS RESILIENCE, LOWERING STRESS, LOWERING BLOOD PRESSURE, AND HELPING WITH BURNOUT.

SOME OF THE TOOLS THAT THE PARTICIPANTS WILL BE RECEIVING IN THIS CHALLENGE ARE GUIDED GRATITUDE, MEDITATIONS AND BREATHING EXERCISES.

AND ONE OF THE NICE THINGS THAT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME IN OUR DISTRICT RIGHT NOW AND IT SPEAKS DIRECTLY TO THE SEGREGATION OF DUTIES FINDING IS THAT IF YOU SEE SOMETHING THAT DOESN'T LOOK RIGHT, YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE THE ABILITY TO ASK A QUESTION.

I CAN'T TELL YOU HOW MANY TIMES A DAY OR A WEEK OR A QUESTION, SOMETHING I'M DOING.

AND MAYBE YOU SHOULD TELL ME.

BUT THERE YOU KNOW THERE'S MANY WAYS TO COMMIT FRAUD.

BUT, YOU KNOW, TAKING UNAUTHORIZED USE OF SCHOOL FACILITIES, UNAUTHORIZED USE OF SCHOOL EQUIPMENT.

NOW, THEY MIGHT BE ABLE TO SO.

WHATEVER THE SCHOOL POLICY, MAKING SURE THAT EMPLOYEES UNDERSTAND IT.

AND THAT, AGAIN, THERE IS A MECHANISM NOT ONLY FOR THE STAFF IN THE BUSINESS OFFICE, BUT OTHERS IN THE DISTRICT WHO SEE SOMETHING THAT JUST DOESN'T LOOK RIGHT.

A POINT OFTEN OVERLOOKED WHEN REPORTING ON SCHOOL FUNDING.

IN THE ARTICLE, SHE ASSUMED THAT THE CHART REFERRED TO TEACHERS.

WHEN SENATOR LARSON ADDS ON MONEY TO FUNDING BILL, IT'S FOR THE TEACHERS.

WHEN WE GAIN MONEY, WE HAVE GAINED MONEY FOR TEACHERS.

WHEN WE LOSE MONEY, WE HAVE LOST MONEY FOR TEACHERS.

DAYTON COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT HAS APPROXIMATELY 300 FULL AND PART TIME EMPLOYEES.

MOST ARE TEACHERS APPROXIMATELY 190.

WHO ARE THE REST? BUS DRIVERS, CUSTODIANS, FOOD SERVICE WORKERS, SECRETARIES, EDUCATIONAL AIDES AND PARAPROFESSIONALS TO NAME A FEW.

WHEN WE LOSE FUNDING, THEY LOSE OUT AS WELL.

MOST OF THESE EMPLOYEES ARE PAID ON AN HOURLY BASIS WITH WAGES STARTING IN 1999, BETWEEN $7.50 AND $8.50.

AT FIRST GLANCE, THIS MAY LOOK PRETTY GOOD, BUT CONSIDER THAT MANY OF THEM WORK LESS THAN 7 HOURS A DAY.

A QUICK SURVEY OF THE CLASSIFIED ADS WILL REVEAL MANY OTHER EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN THE VALLEY THAT HAVE SIMILAR PAY AND OFFER MORE HOURS EACH WEEK.

IS IT ANY WONDER THAT WE HAVE PROBLEMS HIRING AND RETAINING EMPLOYEES IN THESE POSITIONS? DOES IT MATTER? YOU BET IT DOES.

THE EIGHT IN THE ELEMENTARY CLASSROOM ALLOWS TEACHERS TO FOCUS ON A SMALLER GROUP OF CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS.

THE BUS DRIVER MAY BE THE FIRST DISTRICT EMPLOYEE THAT YOUR CHILD SEES EACH MORNING.

WE ALL TRUST THEM TO DELIVER OUR CHILDREN SAFELY TO SCHOOL OR SOME FAR CORNER OF THE STATE AND BACK, REGARDLESS OF ROAD CONDITIONS.

IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN AT HOME, YOU CAN BEGIN TO IMAGINE WHAT 670 TEENAGERS DUE TO A BUILDING IN ONE DAY.

YET THERE IS THERE IT IS READY TO GO THE NEXT MORNING.

SECRETARIES ARE THE HUB THAT CONNECTS TEACHERS, STUDENTS AND PARENTS ALL DAY LONG, AND THEY STILL MANAGE TO RUN THIS BUSINESS WE CALL SCHOOL.

OUR FOOD SERVICE PERSONNEL ARE TRYING TO KEEP THESE GROWING BOTTOMLESS PITS FED.

HOPEFULLY WITH SOMETHING NUTRITIOUS, THESE PEOPLE ARE THE SUPPORT STAFF AND THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT THEY DO.

SUPPORT THE TEACHERS IN THE JOB OF EDUCATING YOUR CHILDREN.

THE MARCH 3RD EDITORIAL STATES THAT IF SOMETHING ISN'T DONE FOR TEACHERS, WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO DEVELOP THE MATURE, EXPERIENCED STAFF FOUND IN OTHER PARTS OF THE STATE.

I MAINTAIN THAT IF SOMETHING ISN'T DONE FOR THE WAGES OF ALL EMPLOYEES IN THE DISTRICT, WE WILL FOREVER REMAIN IN A STATE OF FLUX.

APPROXIMATELY ONE THIRD OF OUR TEACHERS EARN LESS THAN 30,000 PER YEAR DUE TO THEIR PLACEMENT ON A SALARY SCHEDULE OR BECAUSE THEY WORK A PART TIME POSITION.

ALL OF THEM ARE TRAINED PROFESSIONALS WITH EDUCATION, RANGING FROM A BACHELOR'S DEGREE TO A MASTER'S DEGREE.

MANY HAVE EARNED ADDITIONAL GRADUATE HOURS BEYOND THEIR ORIGINAL DEGREE AND MAY HAVE SEVERAL YEARS TEACHING EXPERIENCE.

DURING MY EIGHT YEARS OF TEACHING SCIENCE AT THE HIGH SCHOOL, WE'VE LOST TWO BIOLOGY TEACHERS AND TWO PHYSICS TEACHERS.

ALL OF THEM ARE LOOKING FOR A QUALITY OF LIFE THAT THEY COULD NOT AFFORD AS TEACHERS IN JACKSON.

TEACHERS FROM THROUGHOUT THE DISTRICT HAVE LEFT FOR THE SAME REASON, AND THERE HAS THERE'S BEEN AN IMPACT ON THE PROGRAMS THAT WE CAN PROVIDE TO THE CHILDREN.

WHILE THE SALARY NEWS IS GRIM FOR TEACHERS, IT'S WORSE FOR OUR SUPPORT STAFF.

MANY OF THEM DO NOT EVEN HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO EARN $20,000 A YEAR.

THEY'RE FACED WITH THE SAME COST OF LIVING AS THE REST OF US, AND THEIR LOSS IMPACTS THE PROGRAMS AND CHILDREN AS WELL.

IT TAKES ALL THE EMPLOYEES OF THE DISTRICT TO MAKE OUR SCHOOLS RUN PROPERLY FROM THE PART TIME FOOD SERVICE WORKER TO THE SUPERINTENDENT.

REMEMBER THAT WHEN YOU READ AN ARTICLE ON SCHOOL FUNDING, THE STATE HAS DECIDED THAT FOR THE NEXT YEAR WE WILL SEE A LOSS IN FUNDING, NOT JUST A LOSS OF MONEY FOR TEACHERS,

BUT A LOSS FOR ALL EMPLOYEES AND PROGRAMS. IN THE END, IT'S A LOSS AND WILL BE FELT BY OUR STUDENTS.

I DON'T THINK THAT WHILE WE HAVE DONE MANY THINGS THAT AND I BELIEVE WE'VE DONE TREMENDOUS THINGS FOR THEM, WE STILL NEED TO REMEMBER THINGS HAVEN'T CHANGED SINCE 1999.

VERY SIMILAR. I COULD JUST CHANGE SOME NUMBERS, BUT HOPEFULLY AS WE CONTINUE FORWARD THAT OUR CURRENT BOARD AND OUR NEW BOARD MEMBERS WILL CONTINUE TO.
